Moving from pilot projects to the real-world application of innovations in ports will be one of the main topics that Smart Ports: Piers of the Future will address.
Barcelona and its port will once again be at the center of the international debate during the first week of November on how to transform innovation into real solutions for the blue economy. On November 3rd, the Port de Barcelona will celebrate the 8th edition of Smart Ports: Piers of the Future, within the framework of Tomorrow.Blue Economy and the Smart City Expo World Congress. The event will gather startups, companies, investors, and innovation experts to tackle the major future challenges of the maritime and port sector.
How can ports move from pilot projects to the real-world application of an innovation? How can industry needs be connected with startup solutions? What does a blue economy project need to attract investment? These will be some of the questions that will shape a day especially focused on bringing innovation, industry, and capital together.
This year's edition of Smart Ports: Piers of the Future will showcase the different initiatives that define the innovation and blue economy ecosystem led by the Port de Barcelona. Among these initiatives, the results of New Latitude and Lighthouse will be presented, which are innovation and acceleration programs promoted by BlueTechPort and the Fundació Barcelona Port Innovation, in collaboration with the Port. These programs have been created to consolidate an environment where ideas can evolve into business projects with real impact.
The afternoon will be dedicated to the Blue Economy Investor Day, with two startup pitch sessions and a panel with investors on how port innovation can generate economic returns, industrial competitiveness, and sustainable impact.
Presentation of the Blue Economy Report 2026
The innovation week will, however, begin a day earlier at the Port de Barcelona itself. On November 2nd, the World Trade Center Barcelona will host the first day of the Lighthouse Innovation Days, which will bring together startups from the 2026 edition, port authorities, companies, and terminals. The meeting will kick off with the public presentation of the first Blue Economy Report 2026, prepared by Mind the Bridge in collaboration with the Port de Barcelona and BlueTechPort.
The study analyzes six major strategic challenges in port innovation, from automation and logistics to sustainability, resilience, environmental monitoring, and marine biotechnology, and incorporates data on startups, investment, technologies, and priorities gathered from interviews with more than ten international ports.
The program will run in parallel with other international events framed within Tomorrow.Blue Economy, which will take place from November 3rd to 5th in Barcelona, reinforcing the connection between innovation, financing, sustainability, and the future of the blue economy during those days.
