A collision occurred involving the ferry and the oil tanker near Penang Port in Malaysia on Tuesday night, 1 September. Twenty-one people were reported injured.

The incident occurred at around 8:40 pm local time when the Malaysian flagged oil tanker Mekar Jaya was reportedly sailing from the Butterworth Deep Water Wharves (BDWW) to the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) while the Malaysian-flagged ferry Teluk Bahang was heading towards the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal.
Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) personnel received the emergency call at around 9:58 pm. JBPM along with other rescue agencies, arrived at the scene and evacuated the passengers.
According to JBPM, a total of 92 people, including passengers, were involved in the incident. Out of 21 injured six were severely injured. All the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
Despite the incident, the ferry services resumed as normal and operations were not disrupted.
The Penang Port Commission (PPC) promptly ordered the formation of a special task force comprising PPC personnel and representatives of the ferry operator to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The ferry operator was also instructed to review its operating procedures to determine whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident.
The extent of damage to the ferry and the condition of the vessel is yet to be known by the authorities.
