The Budget Committee of the National Assembly of Deputies approved in first debate the Panama Canal budget project. The financial allocation reaches USD 5,560,427,235 for the fiscal period from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027.
According to the Panama Canal Authority, "the budget's priorities are to protect the business, ensure the continuity and sustainability of operations, and prepare the Canal for the future. Within this framework, it allocates resources to advance strategic initiatives such as the Río Indio lake project, the energy corridor, port terminals, and the logistics corridor."
"It also supports the maintenance and protection of assets, comprehensive risk management, conservation and reforestation of the Basin, cybersecurity and technological continuity, as well as the training, well-being, and strengthening of human capital capabilities," the publication added.
The organization reported that the aforementioned budget includes a contribution from the National Treasury of USD 3,611,525,016, equivalent to an additional 12.9% compared to the previous allocation.
Furthermore, it was reported that "in terms of investments, the project allocates USD 341,633,450 for new investments, including capital projects and resources for the development of strategic initiatives. An execution of USD 82,080,114 is planned for the Río Indio lake initiative, as part of a comprehensive social development project aimed at ensuring the availability and quality of water for population consumption and Canal operations."
It is worth noting that for the official promulgation of the budget, the approval of the full Panamanian Congress in the second and third debate instances is still pending.
