The Panama Canal presented the book "The Future is Born in Panama — 10 Years of the Expanded Canal: Global Strategic Platform," a work that compiles the historical memory of the expansion program, within the framework of its participation as guest of honor at the 22nd edition of the Panama International Book Fair, held at the ATLAPA Convention Center.
The presentation was led by Deputy Administrator, Chief Sustainability Officer, and Administrator Designate, Ilya Espino de Marotta, who highlighted the value of preserving the experience accumulated during the execution of one of the country's most important infrastructure projects, as it marks 10 years since its inauguration.
"Our level of transparency, the fact that we have given over 30 billion balboas to the State in these 25 years of Panamanian administration, and also achieved a successful expansion within budget and well within time, I believe the Canal has amply demonstrated what we can do," she affirmed.
Also participating in the discussion were Miguel Lorenzo, Vice President of Infrastructure and Engineering, who spoke about the technical complexity of the construction and the capacity of Panamanians to execute large projects; and Agenor Correa, Vice President of Legal Affairs, who highlighted the institutional robustness, governance, and professional continuity that made the expansion possible.
"The Future is Born in Panama — 10 Years of the Expanded Canal: Global Strategic Platform" gathers testimonies, images, and background information on the planning, construction, and operation of the third set of locks. In addition to documenting the technical dimension of the work, the book presents the expansion as a result of the knowledge, leadership, negotiation skills, and collective work of thousands of people.
The Canal's participation in the Fair includes a main stand that offers the public a journey through the history, present, and future of the interoceanic waterway. The space incorporates a replica of the President Roberto F. Chiari Library and content on the expansion, Canal operation, its strategic vision towards 2035, water resource management, and the effects of climatic phenomena such as El Niño and global warming.
Thousands of people have visited the Canal's spaces so far, which also include a children's stand with games, publications, and educational activities aimed at introducing children and young people to the knowledge of the interoceanic waterway.
The cultural agenda included the presentation of the play "The Dream of an Isthmus" at the Anayansi Theater, which narrates the history of the Panama Canal, attended by over a thousand young people. Additionally, it includes the presentation of Décimas al Canal by Luis Bernal; a discussion on Canal novels; the presentation of the book "El calipso: ayer, hoy y mañana" (Calypso: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow); and a meeting with Canal writers, among other activities.
With its participation as guest of honor, the Panama Canal reaffirms its commitment to culture, education, the dissemination of knowledge, and the preservation of historical memory, as essential components of national development and identity.
