Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has contracted the ferry design consultancy naValue GmbH to provide support during the conceptual design phase of the New Mull Vessels project. This project involves the acquisition of new vessels for the Oban-Craignure route, which is part of the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Services (CHFS) network.
This appointment marks the beginning of the project's conceptual design phase, during which vessel design concepts and options will be developed and evaluated. As part of this process, CMAL and naValue will investigate and assess the feasibility of low-emission vessel designs, in line with the Scottish Government's climate change commitments, including emission reduction targets established in legislation.
Jim Anderson, CMAL's Director of Vessels, said that "we look forward to collaborating with naValue on the conceptual design of the new Mull vessels. These ferries will play a fundamental role in supporting communities, businesses, and visitors on the Oban-Craignure route, and it is important that the design process reflects the needs of those who depend on this service. We will explore practical design options that ensure a reliable ferry service while contributing to reducing emissions across the Clyde and Hebrides network."
