Lloyd's Register will provide classification and technical assurance services for the conversion of an LNG carrier into a floating storage unit (FSU) for Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO, a subsidiary of Perenco.
The former LNG carrier Bayelsa, now provisionally named FSU LNG Cap Lopez, is undergoing conversion at Drydocks World Dubai.
Once the conversion is complete, the floating storage unit will provide LNG storage for the Gabon offshore project, facilitating liquefaction, storage, and export from a nearby offshore barge, while also contributing to reducing routine gas flaring and improving overall energy efficiency.
Sean Van der Post, Global Offshore Business Director at Lloyd's Register, stated that "the conversion of the FSU Cap Lopez LNG carrier reflects the growing momentum for LNG carrier conversions and floating storage solutions, as operators seek flexible and lower-impact ways to develop gas resources. Independent technical assurance and robust life extension strategies are essential as assets adapt to new operational profiles and environments."
"Through our involvement in this project, LR continues to strengthen its position in the LNG and floating gas sector, providing clients with reliable technical insights, regulatory certainty, and practical solutions that enable safer and more resilient maritime and offshore energy operations worldwide," the executive added.
The project includes significant steelwork (specific renovations and extensions), new piping systems, the installation of a boil-off gas recovery module, and other measures to extend the structural lifespan. These types of projects are increasingly considered a faster and more cost-effective alternative to newbuild solutions, especially for offshore gas field development.
LR's involvement spans the entire conversion and life extension process, providing classification, plan approval, inspection, and technical supervision to ensure all modifications comply with strict safety, structural, and regulatory requirements. Working collaboratively with Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO and the shipyard, LR contributes to ensuring the integrity and long-term operability of the asset in its new role.
