The cargo vessel Fri Skien reportedly developed a leak while sailing off the coast of France on 7 June. Emergency services responded promptly, and the leak was successfully stabilised. There have been no reports of injuries or pollution.
The vessel reported developing the leak in mid-afternoon while positioned approximately 20 nautical miles off Cap de la Hague in Normandy, France. Despite the incident, the crew was able to manoeuvre and navigate the ship safely.
The vessel sent an emergency alert to CROSS Jobourg, France's regional maritime rescue coordination centre. By 7:00 p.m., local time an evaluation and intervention team along with firefighters had boarded the vessel. Working in coordination with the captain, shipowner, and crisis management team, the emergency responders successfully stabilised the leak.
Later the ship proceeded to the nearby port of Le Havre, France, for further inspections.
The Fri Skien is a Cyprus-flagged general cargo ship built in 2000. The vessel measures 89.25 metres in length, with a beam of 13.3 metres and a gross tonnage of 2,780.
