The incident occurred at approximately 11:36 UTC, about 4 nautical miles off Mareeyo, Somalia. Eight armed unauthorized persons boarded the vessel and subsequently took control. The UKMTO has corroborated the incident in its own report and classified it as a hijacking.
Maritime security firm Vanguard Tech identified the vessel as Lutuf sailing under the flag of a Cameroon and built in 1995. It has a length of 76.43 metres, a beam of 12 metres, and a gross tonnage of 498.
The UKMTO and the JMIC have issued advisories on pirate threats in the region due to persistent opportunistic attacks on vessels.
This is the fifth hijacking of a vessel near the Somali coast since April this year. The previous four were the Honour 25 hijacked on 21 April, the Sward on 26 April, the Eureka on 2 May, and the Asana on 17 July.
