CMA CGM could be the shipping company behind a letter of intent to order 12 new 24,000 TEU dual-fuel LNG container ships from the private Chinese shipyard Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ).
According to Alphaliner, it has not yet been possible to identify the shipping company, but it considered the French brand as the most likely owner and operator of the eventual order, which was also suggested by brokerage sources.
"The Marseille-based shipping company, currently number three globally after MSC and Maersk, already has the third-largest order book after MSC (2.92 Mteu) and COSCO Group (1.91 Mteu), and Alphaliner learned earlier this year that CMA CGM was 'in the market' looking for another series of megamax vessels," the analyst noted.
"Yangzijiang is already the builder of ten Jacques Saade Mk-III class dual-fuel LNG-powered ships designed by Maric, with a capacity of 24,212 TEU. The first of these was delivered in May, and the series is expected to be completed by March 2028," it stated.
According to Alphaliner, if it is confirmed that CMA CGM is the shipping company behind the letter of intent and the orders are formalized as planned, the Marseille-based company would expand its fleet of LNG-powered megamax vessels to 35 units, a sufficient number of ships to fully cover three services between the Far East and Europe.
"Deliveries could take place between 2029 and 2030, and the cost of the vessels is likely to be around 245 to 250 million US dollars per unit," the analyst specified.
