The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has implemented new operational restrictions due to a rainfall deficit in its watershed. From September 3rd, 34 daily slots are available, and starting September 15th, the total will be reduced to 32 reservable transits.

The measure responds to an accumulated rainfall deficit of 35.8% between April and August compared to the historical average. Additionally, the maximum draft for Neopanamax vessels remains at 48 feet, while the planned reduction to 14.48 meters has been postponed until October 1st.

These restrictions could lead to increased times and costs for international maritime trade, especially on a route that moves nearly 5% of global trade. Panama projects the development of the Río Indio lake as a new water source, with works planned between 2027 and 2031.
