The Panama Canal will incorporate a pilot booking slot program for Panamax vessels for the first time. The initiative, scheduled between January 3 and April 3, 2027, will complement the existing scheme for Neopanamax vessels.
The pilot includes 51 packages with 288 slots, while the Neopanamax program will offer 36 packages and 270 slots. Allocations will be made through sealed-bid competitions, allowing shipping companies and operators to plan their transits with greater anticipation.
This measure seeks to improve itinerary predictability during the dry season, given operational restrictions associated with water availability. The long-term booking system is in addition to the ordinary mechanisms and auctions that the Canal maintains to manage its transit capacity.
