Rafael Rey has resigned from his position as Peru's Minister of Transport and Communications ( MTC). The former Secretary of State justified his departure from the government due to health reasons.
In a letter addressed to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Rey stated, "I hereby submit my irrevocable resignation from the position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport and Communications, due to health reasons that prevent me from continuing to fulfill the responsibilities of the position with the dedication it demands."
Furthermore, the now former minister affirmed, "I express my profound gratitude to both of you for the trust placed in me and for the opportunity to serve the country from this high responsibility. It has been an honor for me to work alongside you and with the public servants, authorities, and technical teams of both the Ministry under my charge and with colleagues and officials from other sectors."
"I remain at your disposal to facilitate an orderly and transparent transfer of management, providing the necessary information to ensure the continuity of the policies, projects, and services under the Ministry's responsibility," the letter concluded.
Meanwhile, through its social media channels, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers stated, "We recognize and appreciate the work carried out by the minister in service of the country and we are confident that his valuable contribution to Peru can be made from other areas."
Rafael Rey was appointed as the head of the MTC by Peru's President, Keiko Fujimori, on July 28, 2026. It should be noted that Rey had also served as Minister of Production and Defense portfolios during Alan García's second government (2006-2011).
Currently, no deadlines have been provided for when the new head of the Ministry of Transport and Communications will be appointed.
