The Minister of Transport and Communications, Rafael Rey Rey, held a meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Peru, Choi Jong-uk, to discuss cooperation opportunities in transport, infrastructure, and communications.
The meeting was attended by the Vice Ministers of Transport, Gabriela Carrasco Carrasco, and Communications, Dalia Suárez Salazar.
One of the central topics was the progress in the construction of the Chinchero International Airport in Cusco. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the execution of the project and the technical assistance that accompanies the development of this strategic work for the country.
The project is envisioned as the hub of the southern region and, in its first stage, will be able to serve between 7 and 12 million passengers per year. It will have a runway more than 4,000 meters long and is being built at more than 3,700 meters above sea level.
Likewise, the need to simultaneously execute complementary works was addressed, such as road accesses, other connecting roads, the wastewater treatment plant, and services in the surroundings of the terminal.
Currently, Cusco airport receives 55 daily flights. The new infrastructure will expand airport capacity and increase the region's connectivity with the country and the world.
Finally, Ambassador Choi Jong-uk expressed Korea's interest in contributing to the establishment of an intelligent transport system in the Lima–Chancay corridor, as well as with actions aimed at road safety and terrestrial connectivity.
