The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced the start of a feasibility study for the establishment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the Lima–Callao–Chancay corridor, one of the main axes for the transport of people and goods and for the country's logistical connection with international markets.
The study, developed with the technical support of the Government of the Republic of Korea, covers 133.2 kilometers of the national road network and will determine the technical, operational, economic, and financial conditions necessary for a future implementation of technological solutions. The evaluation is estimated to conclude in July 2027.
"This initiative will promote concrete actions to equip our roads with modern technology, ensuring safe and sustainable mobility. We will prioritize the Lima-Callao-Chancay section, a key multimodal infrastructure axis to boost Peru's foreign trade in the South Pacific through the strategic interconnection between the Chancay Megaport, the Port of Callao, and the Jorge Chávez International Airport," highlighted the Vice Minister of Transport, Gabriela Carrasco, during a workshop held at the MTC, which was attended by representatives of the governments of Peru and the Republic of Korea, as well as entities linked to transport and road infrastructure.
Technology for Safer Mobility
The Lima–Callao–Chancay corridor concentrates increasing transport and logistics activity and faces challenges associated with congestion, road safety, traffic management, and timely emergency response. In this context, Intelligent Transport Systems constitute a tool to manage road infrastructure more efficiently and improve safety conditions for all road users, through the use of technology, data, and connectivity.
The study will analyze the viability of integrating sensors, cameras, communication networks, and analytical tools with a control center, to obtain and process information from the road network in real time. This will allow for the evaluation of solutions aimed at, among other aspects, traffic monitoring, incident detection, emergency management, and the generation of information for more timely decision-making.
For the MTC, this study constitutes a starting point for having a roadmap that will allow defining future investments in technology applied to transport and road infrastructure, with an emphasis on safety, efficiency, and sustainability. In addition, the study will establish a model of innovation and technological management that can be scalable to other corridors and roads in the country.
This initiative joins other actions being promoted by the MTC to advance towards road management based on information and technology. These include the implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Control Center, which will strengthen the monitoring of the road network and the response capacity to incidents and emergencies. Likewise, a public investment project is being formulated to incorporate Intelligent Transport Systems services in more than 10,000 kilometers of the national road network, with technical assistance from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
