MSC Shipmanagement Limited received a $6 million fine and four years of probation for the June 5, 2024 incident involving the containership MSC Michigan VII in Charleston, South Carolina. The vessel's chief engineer, Fernando San Diego San Juan, was fined $2,000 after pleading guilty to failing to report hazardous conditions and obstructing the federal investigation. The incident occurred when a disconnected linkage rod caused the engine to accelerate to 16 to 17 knots, forcing authorities to evacuate the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.
