MedCruise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this June at its GA in Palermo, Sicily. Seatrade Cruise publications have charted its growth trajectory, its mission and evolution these past three decades.
Editor-in-chief Mary Bond dipped into the Seatrade Cruise archives to provide a potted history of MedCruise which is by no means exhaustive.
From the first MedCruise president, Joe Grioli through to the current president Theodora Riga, this publication charts the association's history as reported by Seatrade Cruise print and digital publications.
The association celebrated its 20th anniversary during the 48th GA in Odessa, Ukraine. In those 20 years, the number of ports had grown to over 100 and the number of passenger movements within the basin and its adjoining seas has risen from 2.5m to 27.4m.
From the first wave of cruise expansion in the 1990s to today's era of digitalisation and decarbonisation, MedCruise has been a constant advocate for its members, ensuring that ports of all sizes have a voice in shaping the future of the cruise industry.
Today the association represents 160 cruise ports from 22 countries and spanning three continents plus 59 associate members.
