The Port of Genoa (Italy) announced the inauguration of an additional access to the facility. This involves an expansion of the Strada della Superba road, which connects to the new Papa Bridge.
More details of the milestone were provided on the Italian facility's website, where it was reported that "the new infrastructure configuration, which offers four lanes (two in each direction) on the elevated road and two lanes at ground level, designed to be expanded if necessary, also includes the activation of the new western overpass, provisionally built pending the completion of the new permanent overpass on the right bank of the Polcevera river."
"This connection allows heavy vehicles arriving from the Genoa airport toll booth to be intercepted and directed directly to the port area, significantly reducing interference between logistics and port traffic and urban traffic," the publication added.
It was also communicated that "the work allows for the elevated passage of the new Ponte del Papa, a structure to be completed in 2024 and representing one of the most innovative achievements in European road engineering. Thanks to its arched structure with two superimposed roadway levels and a single span of almost one hundred meters, the new viaduct is the first bridge in Europe and one of the first in the world to adopt this particular structural configuration."
"The inauguration of the new connection is part of a broader port traffic redevelopment program, valued at approximately 175.6 million euros, covering the entire Sampierdarena basin. The new infrastructure axis is one of the key components of the redesign of the main 6 km access road to the port terminals, from the western end of the city to the historic Bettolo and Sanità docks, passing through the strategic San Benigno junction, which connects to the Genoa Ovest highway toll booth," it was indicated.
In this regard, Matteo Paroli, president of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, assured that "the commissioning of these first 3 km of the new port overpass represents a strategic step for Genoa and its logistics system," concluded the executive.
