Chile is often defined by the length of its territory, but we rarely grasp what that means for those living in the southernmost parts of the country.
In hundreds of localities, development depends on a barge, a ferry, or a transporter, and for thousands of families, these vessels are not just a means of transport, but a bridge to health, education, supplies, work, and opportunities.
However, second-hand vessels, built decades ago abroad with increasingly obsolete technologies, are still in operation. This increases operational and maintenance costs, raises the risk of technical failures, and affects service continuity. Furthermore, many were not designed for the geographical and climatic conditions of the routes where they currently operate, which limits their efficiency.
With over 6,400 kilometers of continental coastline and territories with fjords, channels, lakes, and archipelagos, maritime infrastructure must be understood as a strategic asset for territorial cohesion.
Projects currently being promoted in different regions of the country are a concrete example of this vision. The repair and modernization of the Andalué ferry, which connects Niebla and Corral in the Los Ríos Region; or the construction of a new barge that will link Futrono and Isla Huapi, in Lago Ranco.
Added to these are the dry-docking and maintenance work on the Padre Antonio Ronchi barge, which connects Puerto Yungay and Río Bravo in Aysén, and the future Lucinda I, which will mark a new chapter for Villa O'Higgins. These initiatives reflect a reality often overlooked: behind every vessel, there is an entire community that depends on its operation.
In this context, national shipbuilding plays a key role. Chile possesses technical capabilities, specialized engineering, and an industry with decades of experience developing solutions adapted to the country's particular geographical and climatic conditions.
Investing in the design, construction, and modernization of vessels in national shipyards not only strengthens technological autonomy but also boosts skilled employment, regional development, and knowledge transfer.
The challenge is not limited to renewing vessels that have successfully completed their operational cycle. It also requires incorporating innovation, energy efficiency, and technologies that allow for the construction of increasingly sustainable vessels, prepared to face the demands of climate change and respond to a growing demand for safe and continuous services.
Every ferry, barge, or transporter that connects isolated communities contributes to reducing development gaps, strengthens local economies, and guarantees equal opportunities for those living far from large urban centers.
Ultimately, building these solutions means building a country. In Chile, where the sea, lakes, and channels are part of our geographical identity, connecting territories is also about uniting people, social equity, and the future.
