An emergency response drill is taking place at the Port of Santos on the morning of Wednesday, October 28, at the São Paulo Regasification Terminal (TRSP), located in the estuary. The scenario involves a natural gas leak, with a simulated escalation to a fire. The training, conducted by the terminal, will mobilize over 60 professionals and will include the participation of the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) and the Civil Defense.
The objective of the exercise is to train interaction with participating agencies and prepare emergency team members for real-life occurrences. The training takes place at the facilities of the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), the main structure of the TRSP.
"Drills like this are fundamental to prepare teams, test protocols, and ensure a coordinated response in emergency situations. Safety is one of Edge's main pillars and is present throughout our operation, through an integrated Health, Safety, and Environment policy. Our commitment is to continuously strengthen prevention and operational readiness, protecting people, facilities, and our operations," says Catarina Amaral, Director of Operations, Logistics, and Technology at Edge, the company responsible for the terminal.
What will be simulated
The simulated scenario foresees a leak in the 16-inch pipeline that connects the loading arms to the terminal's metering station (EMED). From this occurrence, procedures for detection and activation of emergency systems, safe interruption of gas flow, and coordination of involved teams, including communication between the vessel (FSRU), the pier, and external resources, will be tested. The exercise will also evaluate protection measures for adjacent facilities.
The simulation also includes managing the interface between the vessel and the terminal, partial evacuation of the area, and assistance to an injured worker. Practical activities include the fire brigade's actions and the provision of first aid.
Mobilization
More than 30 firefighters from the FSRU crew and seven firefighters from the terminal's operation team will be present. Additionally, 15 professionals from Edge and the terminal operator will participate in the response structure and evaluation of the exercise, along with eight public agents. No interdiction of public roads in the municipalities of Santos, Guarujá, or Cubatão is planned.
