Ecuador ranks ninth among the countries with the highest cargo movement through the Panama Canal, a key route connecting the Pacific with Europe and the East Coast of the United States. In 2025, the country mobilized 15.5 million long tons through this waterway.
Of the registered volume, 9.8 million tons corresponded to imports and 5.7 million tons to exports. Ecuadorian cargo transported through the Canal increased by 18.3% compared to the previous year, reflecting the importance of this route for national foreign trade.
As of September 4, 2026, the Panama Canal Authority reduced the number of vessels that can transit daily from 36 to 32 due to drought. This situation occurs while forecasts of possible conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon in the area persist.
