The Panama Canal modified the criteria for reallocating canceled or available slots during reservation periods 1A and 2 of the Neopanamax locks. The measure reinstates the allocation scheme in effect before July 2026, with priorities based on vessel type.

Slots will be offered preferentially to containerships, liquefied natural gas carriers, liquefied petroleum gas carriers, and vehicle carriers. Additionally, the requirements for the NetZero program, which promotes the participation of low-emission and more energy-efficient vessels, were updated.

Among the changes, vessels transiting for the first time may undergo a preliminary tonnage inspection outside of Panama and request it before their arrival at the interoceanic waterway. These provisions seek to streamline evaluation processes and strengthen operational efficiency and the sustainability of maritime transport.
