The plan would include 12 vessels of 24,000 TEU, in addition to 24 ships of 19,000 TEU and six of 18,600 TEU. The new vessels would be LNG-powered and have dual-fuel operating capability. If materialized, the orders would expand the shipping company's capacity by approximately 750,000 TEU and bring its fleet to about 5.5 million TEU. The larger capacity container ships would be destined for services between Asia and Europe within the Gemini Cooperation. The potential expansion responds to Maersk's strategy to have additional capacity and maintain its competitive position on major international shipping routes.
