Carnival Corporation signed a deal with Silverstream Technologies to install the Silverstream System on its Ace Class ships being constructed at Fincantieri, Italy, starting with Carnival Destiny arriving in summer 2029.
Silverstream is a maritime air lubrication technology provider. Its Silverstream System works by reducing frictional resistance between the water and the hull surface, minimising net fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Ships can be retrofitted with the Silverstream technology in 10 days or less, minimising disruptions to vessel operations.
The new order builds on Silverstream's long-standing collaboration with Carnival Corp., which has over 127,000 system running hours to date across its global cruise fleet. The Silverstream System is installed or ordered onboard 18 vessels across several Carnival Corp. cruise lines, including 13 in-service vessels and a further five currently in build or on order, made up of two Excel-class and three Ace Class vessels.
Once built, the LNG-powered Ace Class vessels will be the largest in Carnival Corp.'s global fleet. The decision to install Silverstream's proven air lubrication technology onboard these three ships will help to further bolster their fuel efficiency, cut fuel consumption and reduce emissions.
The 230,000 gt vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2029, 2031 and 2033, will feature over 3,000 passenger staterooms and will accommodate almost 8,000 passengers at full capacity. They will also be the largest ships ever built at Fincantieri.
Bo-Erik Blomqvist, SVP for corporate shipbuilding, Carnival Corporation, said: "Our collaboration with Silverstream continues to deepen as we advance technologies that further improve energy efficiency across our fleet. Their role in the Ace Class program reflects a collaboration grounded in continuous improvement and aligned priorities. As we introduce these ships, we remain focused on delivering meaningful gains in energy-efficient performance to reduce our fuel use in support of our ongoing decarbonisation aspirations."
The deal builds on an existing partnership. Carnival Cruise Line's fourth and fifth newbuild Excel-class ships will be equipped with Silverstream's air lubrication system. Carnival Festivale, scheduled for delivery in spring 2027, and Carnival Tropicale, scheduled for delivery in 2028, will represent the second and third Excel-class ships to feature this technology.
With a capacity of over 5,000 passengers, the 180,000 gt vessels will be built at Meyer Werft and will feature key sustainability technologies to support Carnival Corp. in meeting its decarbonisation goals.
Noah Silberschmidt, founder & CEO, Silverstream Technologies, said: "Building on our longstanding relationship of more than a decade, we are proud to, once again, support Carnival on their sustainability journey by installing the Silverstream System onboard the new Ace Class vessels.
"Our technology will help these ships operate even more efficiently to reduce fuel use and the associated emissions.
"With more than 250 orders, over 150 installations and a growing team across the UK and China, Silverstream is delivering at scale to meet the needs of the world's leading shipowners."
