Royal Caribbean Group is talks to acquire a stake in Sandals Resorts International, according to FT.com and CNBC.
CNBC said Royal Caribbean is nearing a $3b deal to take a 50% stake in Sandals, while FT.com, which broke the story, reported Royal Caribbean was eyeing a majority stake.
Royal Caribbean did not respond to a request for information.
Sandals runs 17 all-inclusive, adults-only resorts across the Caribbean and Bahamas along with two family-friendly Beaches properties.
Sandals resorts are located in Curaçao, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, The Bahamas and St. Vincent, while Beaches resorts are found in Turks and Caicos and Jamaica.
Royal Caribbean describes itself as a vacation company and Chairman/CEO Jason Liberty often discusses an increasing diversity of offerings to provide a "lifetime of vacations" and "keep guests within our ecosystem of vacation offerings."
The company has been developing beach clubs, with Paradise Island (Nassau) and Santorini open and Lelepa (Vanuatu) and Cozumel to come, and aims to expand its Perfect Day portfolio beyond CocoCay in The Bahamas to Mexico.
Silversea is nearing the opening of its hotel at Puerto Williams in Southern Chile to use as a gateway for Antarctica cruises. And the company is branching into river cruising with 20 vessels ordered for Celebrity Cruises.
RCL closed down more than 6% on Tuesday, at $234.89. Shares have traded as high as $356.39 over the past 52 weeks. That was on Feb. 10.
