1969 Crane Dismantled in Port of Uddevalla After 57 Years

Crane 11 of the Port of Uddevalla, built in 1969 and operational at Skeppsholm Quay since then, performed its last lift after 57 years of operation. Dismantling is underway because maintenance costs have become too high. New port investments allow the replacement crane to handle three times more goods in the same amount of time.

After more than half a century at the Port of Uddevalla, Crane 11 performed its last lift. The unit was built in 1969 and has since operated at Skeppsholmpiren (Skeppsholm Quay), which was inaugurated shortly thereafter.

Since 1992, the four current port cranes have become a well-known and almost iconic part of the port's skyline. Right now, the dismantling of the crane is underway. It is being divided into parts that are then separated to be transported away from Skeppsholmpiren.

But after 57 years, Crane 11 has far exceeded its lifespan. The need for maintenance has increased, and the costs have finally become too high to justify continued operation. Of course, it's a bit sad to see such a familiar part of the port's silhouette disappear.

At the same time, much has happened since this crane was built. New port investments mean that goods can now be handled much more efficiently. The new crane can, in simplified terms, operate three times more goods than Crane 11 in the same amount of time.
