UKMTO stated it had received the information from a verifiable source. The initial report gave limited details, noting that the environmental impact of the strike was unknown and advising vessels in the area to proceed with caution.
On the same day, US network CBS News reported, citing US officials, that the vessel under attack was the CMA CGM San Antonio. According to the report, the container ship was struck by a land-attack cruise missile, and several crew members, Filipino nationals, were injured.
As of midday on 5 May, the vessel was reported to be near Dubai.
The CGM San Antonio is a Malta-flagged container vessel built in 2005. It has a length of 222.14 metres, a beam of 30.07 metres, and a gross tonnage of 28,592.
