Six people are reported dead and 130 are still missing after the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea on 13–14 September. 107 people have been rescued and efforts are underway to locate the remaining missing people.

The incident occurred as the vessel was headed from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin. It was carrying 213 passengers, 30 crew members and 89 vehicles as cargo.
A distress call was received from the vessel at around 04:10 local time. Indonesian authorities, including the transport minister, have stated that aerial observation showed the vessel had capsized but was not fully submerged.
A joint task force involving the Indonesian Navy, the maritime police and other agencies has been set up for the rescue operation. All vessels in the area have been notified to report any signs of survivors or debris from the vessel.
The Virgo Transport 8 is an Indonesian-flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel built in 1987. It has a length of 119 metres, a beam of 21 metres and a gross tonnage of 4,277.
