Environmental Assessment of the Vuosaari Port Expansion Project in Finland

The environmental assessment process for the expansion of the Port of Vuosaari (Finland) has begun. This procedure will evaluate the environmental and social impacts related to the aforementioned project.

Details of this milestone were provided on the Port of Helsinki website, where it was reported that "this expansion will ensure an efficient and uninterrupted flow of Finnish foreign trade. Above-average value cargo is transported through the Port of Vuosaari in trucks and containers. Well-designed and efficient port infrastructure will remain fundamental for the smooth functioning of daily life in Finland, as the Port of Vuosaari is the country's main transit port for everyday consumer goods, both in normal and exceptional circumstances."

Furthermore, it was indicated that "the EIA procedure examines two preliminary expansion options. According to these options, the port area would gradually extend seaward by approximately 25 to 30 hectares. The expansion would include new quays and shipyard areas, the infilling of the Ruusuniemi channel to create space for port traffic, and the construction of a new navigation channel or the improvement of the existing shipyard's navigation channel, including its turning basin. The need for a possible breakwater and its location is also being studied."

On the other hand, the functioning of the EIA was explained, adding that it "identifies environmental impacts that are likely to be significant during the construction and operation of the project. The assessment will cover impacts on aspects such as water quality, currents, sediments, underwater nature, fish populations, birdlife, and nature reserves in the marine area. Impacts on traffic, noise, air quality, climate, landscape, recreational use, navigation, and the living conditions and quality of life of people will also be assessed."

"The EIA program sets out the project alternatives, the methods to be used in the assessment, and a plan for organizing participation. Once the program is finalized, the Finnish Supervisory Agency will submit it for public consultation, provisionally scheduled for early 2027, at which point authorities, residents, organizations, and other interested parties can submit their comments and opinions. Public events will be held during the EIA program and EIA report phases," the publication concluded.
