The northern lock in the Kiel Canal was closed for around six hours on 18 May after an oil sheen was spotted in one of the lock chambers.

The sheen was first noticed at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time in a chamber holding four vessels. Authorities inspected the vessels one by one and identified the Rix Mariner as the source.
The oily sheen spread across an area of around 3,000 square metres. The Kiel Fire Brigade and the State Agency for Coastal Protection were deployed to the scene. After lengthy deliberations, officials determined that the sheen did not pose a sufficient threat to warrant intervention or a cleanup operation.
Following several hours with the vessels held in place, they were finally allowed to depart the lock chamber at around 7:00 p.m. The Rix Mariner was then escorted to the North Harbour and moored at Voith Quay for further investigation.
The vessel is expected to remain there until the cause of the leak has been identified and repaired. As of 19 May, it was still stationary.
