October 27, 2026: The Port of Oakland will soon begin construction on critical infrastructure improvements across the Oakland Seaport, including upgrades that will enable Matson Terminal to transition to a 100% zero-emission cargo-handling equipment fleet. Once complete, Matson Terminal will be the first marine terminal at the Port of Oakland to achieve this milestone, supported by new charging and electrical infrastructure. The Port celebrated the start of construction today alongside California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin and others.
This milestone reflects the Port of Oakland's commitment to a cleaner, greener future. These investments are also a major step toward strengthening the Port's competitiveness, improving freight efficiency, and reducing emissions while supporting California's broader clean transportation goals.
"The Port has been advancing and transitioning to green technologies, and to have our first terminal achieve a zero-emissions equipment fleet, is an important moment," said Port of Oakland Executive Director Kristi McKenney. "We will continue to look for opportunities to utilize greener, cleaner technologies to serve our customers and the community of Oakland."
The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) is supporting this landmark investment with $119 million in funding through the Port and Freight Infrastructure Program (PFIP). PFIP is a California program to modernize the state's goods-movement network, reduce emissions, and relieve supply chain congestion.
"Today, we're building on Governor Newsom's commitment to strengthen California's ports with investments that modernize infrastructure, support economic growth and advance cleaner, more efficient goods movements," said California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin. "We are thrilled to support the Port of Oakland as it advances towards important milestones and its goal of zero emissions that will directly benefit communities in Oakland and our state at-large."
The Matson Terminal at the Port of Oakland is operated by SSA Terminals, a joint venture between SSA Marine and Matson.
"SSA Marine is committed to environmental responsibility, operational efficiency, and environmental innovation across our operations," said Adam Patalano, Regional Vice President of SSA Marine. "On behalf of SSA Terminals, we are proud to partner with the Port of Oakland and the State of California on this deployment of zero-emissions cargo handling equipment, and we look forward to continuing to partner with the Port to transition additional zero-emission cargo handling equipment in the future."
The project is expected to be completed in 2028.
