Chile and Jordan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a Joint Trade and Investment Committee, the first bilateral mechanism aimed at addressing the economic and commercial relationship between both countries.
The document was signed by the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations, Paula Estévez, and the Ambassador of Jordan in Chile, Mohammad Al Shabbarn, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Committee will be an institutional space for dialogue on trade and investments, addressing matters such as trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, among others.
Its operation will allow for the identification of concrete areas of economic cooperation and the exchange of information and experiences between both countries.
The instance will formalize a relationship that, although limited, has shown dynamism recently. During 2025, trade between both countries reached USD 15.8 million, an increase of 61.2% compared to 2024.
Chilean exports totaled USD 9.1 million, with a 71.6% increase, and mainly consisted of chemical wood pulp, grapes, raisins, kiwis, lupin grains and flour, and carrageenan. On the other hand, imports from Jordan amounted to USD 6.7 million, with a 49% increase.
In addition to the above, there is great growth potential for trade between both nations, mainly based on the complementarity of their economies.
Chile has a broad agri-food offering with recognized experience in global supply chains, while Jordan is a competitive exporter of phosphates, fertilizers, and chemical products, inputs in high demand for agricultural production. This complementarity opens up opportunities to diversify and expand bilateral trade in the coming years.
"The signing of this Memorandum marks a significant step in the bilateral relationship and provides, for the first time, an institutional framework to channel commercial dialogue with Jordan," said Undersecretary Paula Estévez.
"While the relationship currently has a limited base, its growth during 2025 demonstrates the existing space for diversification. This complementarity opens up opportunities to diversify and expand bilateral trade in the coming years, so we view the progress in the relationship very positively. A next step, eventually, would be to open conversations to advance a trade agreement," she added.
For his part, Ambassador Mohammad Al Shabbarn commented that "we consider the signing of this Memorandum as an important first step towards strengthening our economic partnership and we look forward to the start of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Jordan and Chile."
"An agreement of this nature would constitute an important milestone in our bilateral relations and could become a pioneering example of deeper economic cooperation between Chile and a Middle Eastern country," he added.
In addition to all of the above, Jordan has a strategic geographical location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, which makes this country a bridge to access other markets in the region.
This is relevant to the diversification of destinations strategy being carried out by the Government of Chile, seeking to deepen access to new markets that offer potential opportunities for the national export sector.
