Iquique Port Company led a collaborative working group with the purpose of jointly addressing the logistics challenges arising from recent weather contingencies on the routes of the Tarapacá Region.
At the meeting, the Chairman of the EPI Board, Max Barrera, along with the General Manager, Rubén Castro, met with representatives of the transport sector, sectoral authorities from the Ministries of Public Works and Transport and Telecommunications, and officials from Carabineros de Chile.
This public-private articulation reaffirms the commitment of key regional stakeholders to implement road and operational coordination measures, especially in the Iquique-Alto Hospicio connection.
In recent weeks, an intense frontal system and floods recorded in the Region caused severe alterations to its road network, caused by rockfalls, mudslides, sinkholes, and extreme floods.
Among the most critical points, connectivity between Iquique and Alto Hospicio was affected by total and partial closures on key arteries such as Route A-16 and Route A-504 due to landslides, as well as prolonged interruptions on sections of Route 15-CH and in various pre-mountain and coastal passes due to the activation of ravines.
This contingency not only left several inland and coastal communities isolated but also forced the urgent deployment of the Ministry of Public Works for clearing tasks and the subsequent declaration of a disaster zone to accelerate the repair of destroyed infrastructure.
"Through this continuous dialogue, we reinforce joint work to safeguard security, ensure the continuity of the supply chain, and develop concrete solutions that strengthen the competitiveness of the regional logistics ecosystem," communicated Iquique Port Company.
