On 16 September, the Sweden-flagged Ro-Ro passenger ship Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, en route to Trelleborg, Sweden, was evacuated after a hazardous substance leaked from a railway wagon at the Rostock port in Germany. All 168 passengers and 41 crewmembers were safe, with few individuals suffering minor injuries from the incident.

The toxic leak was detected at around 3 pm local time while the ship was conducting its loading operation at the port. In response to the emergency, the firefighters and water police arrived and sealed the suspected danger zone. The firefighters used chemical protective suits to contain the leak.
All the passengers were evacuated to the terminal, and three people suffered minor injuries. Four crewmembers were taken to hospital for medical examination as a precaution. The captain and several crew members remained onboard as they were not in immediate danger.
An investigation by the authorities is underway to determine the actual cause of the incident.
Following the incident, the 1996-built ship resumed its scheduled voyage to Trelleborg on 17 September.
