The Panama Canal will celebrate tomorrow, Monday, the inauguration of engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta as administrator of the interoceanic waterway for the period 2026-2033. With over 40 years of experience in the institution, Espino de Marotta will become the first woman to hold the position of administrator of the Panama Canal.
The ceremony will take place at the Administration Building and will be attended by the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino; the Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jose Ramón Icaza; and the members of the Board of Directors. The event will formalize the orderly handover of the Administration and the beginning of a new management at the helm of one of the most important infrastructures for Panama and world trade.
Espino de Marotta began her career at the Canal in 1985 as the only female engineer at the shipyard of the then Industrial Division. Throughout her career, she has held technical, operational, and executive responsibilities, including Vice President of Transit Business, Executive Vice President of Engineering, Sustainability Officer, and Deputy Administrator. She also played a central role in the execution of the Canal Expansion Program.
The new administrator will be responsible for executing the Strategic Vision 2025-2035, aimed at guaranteeing water security, strengthening operational resilience, and diversifying the institution's services. Her priority initiatives include the Río Indio lake, port terminals in the Atlantic and Pacific, the energy corridor, and the logistics corridor, designed to preserve the Canal's competitiveness and expand its contribution to national development.
