The Port Authority of Avilés (APAV, Spain) has completed the placement of 438 concrete blocks on the San Juan breakwater. The structures weigh up to 70 tons each.
According to reports, the objective of the work is to improve the resistance of this infrastructure of the Port of Avilés, strengthening it to face intense sea storms related to climate change.
The blocks were placed using a high-capacity crane (600 tons) with a working radius of up to 50 meters. Upon completion of this process, the corresponding beacon was installed, and work began on conditioning the crown pavement to ensure the transit of machinery in the area.
In this regard, the Head of APAV's Infrastructure Department, Olga Sánchez, stated that "climate change is a proven and verifiable fact at the Port of Avilés. There are two variables that we have observed continuously growing in recent years: one is the average sea level, and the other is wave height during sea storms."
The works were carried out by the company Ogensa for a budget of 3,732,323 euros, completing their work within a six-month period.
