During the first half of 2026, the total container volume at the Yilport Gävle terminal increased by 16% compared to the same period last year. This growth was due to a higher volume of cargo from regular customers, as well as the arrival of new cargo flows at the Swedish terminal.
The figures cover the terminal's total container flow, including volumes transported to and from the terminal by rail. This reflects the terminal's role as a logistics hub where sea, rail, and road transport converge.
Forest products have been a key driver of growth. Volumes of paper, pulp, and sawn timber, among other products, increased during this period.
This development also reflects a long-term shift in how goods are transported. In markets where goods were traditionally shipped unpackaged, an increasing proportion of the total volume is now transported in containers. An example of this is cargo flows linked to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) markets.
As the largest container port on Sweden's east coast, strategically located near many major cargo owners, the Port of Gävle is well-positioned to benefit from this development.
"Our current customers are increasing their volumes, while new flows are being added, and more and more cargo owners are choosing containers as a transport solution. This is a very positive development, resulting from the close collaboration between cargo owners, freight forwarders, shipping lines, and Yilport. Thanks to Gävle's strategic location and our investments in the terminal, we are well-positioned for continued growth," said Joseph Muhumuza, Regional Commercial Director for Yilport Nordic.
As the volume of cargo transported through the Port of Gävle increases, it becomes more attractive for shipping lines to expand their services. Over time, this could lead to increased frequency of departures and offer customers a wider range of shipping lines. Increased competition could also contribute to more competitive sea freight rates.
