Berg Propulsion will open its own office in Mumbai, expanding its global network and reflecting its growing involvement in shipbuilding projects across India.
Scheduled to open on January 1, 2027, the new office will serve as a contact hub for Berg's activities in the country, while strengthening its relationships with leading shipyards such as Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), and Chowgule Shipyard.
The new office will be headed by Amrita Singh, Berg Propulsion's New Sales Account Manager, who will assume the role of General Manager. She will be supported by Prasenjit Roy, a former Indian Navy Commander and Program Manager for Commercial Shipbuilding at GRSE. His experience in equipment commissioning will also benefit quality assurance services.
Singh and Roy have already successfully collaborated on the supply of Berg propulsion systems for two 33.55-meter electric tugboats currently under construction at KMEW Group's facilities in Mumbai.
"We will focus on identifying and supporting projects where Berg solutions add value, improve efficiency, and reduce emissions. Working closely with our customers and partners, we look forward to tailoring our systems, services, and support to the opportunities this growing market offers," commented Singh.
"The propulsion sector in India is truly promising right now. Both the Navy and Coast Guard have significant expansion programs, with opportunities for the type of controllable pitch propeller (CPP) systems that Berg offers, present in virtually all platforms," stated Roy.
Indian shipyards are also focusing on green propulsion opportunities, with particular interest in hybrid configurations, variable speed systems, and CPP systems. "Proximity is critical in this market, where in the next five years optimized efficiency will go from being a market differentiator to a minimum requirement," added Roy.
With strong private sector investment and government support available for projects prioritizing sustainability, Berg will seek to expand its commercial presence in India in the tugboat, dredger, and offshore platform support vessel construction segments. It will also establish a network of trained service agents in Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam, where most of its clients' vessels operate.
"We will recruit qualified local talent and implement training programs, thereby developing extensive expertise to better serve customers across India. The new Mumbai office also offers the possibility of providing support to customers in other South Asian countries, such as Sri Lanka," concluded Singh.
