AAL Shipping reported a 19% improvement in its Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) across its entire fleet since 2023.
The figure improved from 17.80 in that year to 14.40 in 2025, meaning less carbon dioxide was emitted for every ton of cargo transported per nautical mile. This improvement reflects the shipping company's ability to manage its fleet growth and higher cargo volumes more efficiently, while reducing emission intensity.
The results, detailed in AAL's 2025 Sustainability Report, are released in a context where the maritime sector is adapting to an increasingly strict environmental landscape, including FuelEU Maritime, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and the IMO's proposed Net-Zero Framework. This framework aims to support the transition of international shipping to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2050, through a global marine fuel standard and a pricing mechanism for greenhouse gas emissions.
"We consider the IMO's proposed Net-Zero Emissions Framework, which is expected to mark the next phase of global maritime decarbonization, to be a positive step for the environment and a significant driver of the sector's transition to net-zero emissions," stated Markus Remmers, Global Director of Operations at AAL Shipping.
"AAL's robust supply chain and operational capabilities allow us to adapt to evolving regulatory requirements, while continuing to support complex project cargo movements worldwide. Early and transparent communication with clients is critical, as it enables us to develop practical and cost-effective solutions that benefit all parties well in advance of implementation deadlines, thereby minimizing disruptions to project execution," Remmers added.
A key factor in this improvement is AAL's third-generation Super B-Class fleet, with a capacity of 32,000 DWT. Introduced in 2024, with cargo capacities exceeding 90,000 CBM and lifting capacities of up to 800 tons, these vessels recorded the best energy efficiency performance across the entire fleet, achieving average EEOI values of 4.27 in 2024 and 4.99 in 2025, all while maintaining the heavy-lift capability and operational flexibility that clients depend on.
In addition to modernizing its fleet, AAL is also improving performance through voyage optimization, advanced vessel monitoring, and digital technologies that promote fuel efficiency and data-driven decision-making across its global operations.
Fundamental to the design and development of the Super B-Class fleet, Yahaya Sanusi, Deputy Head of Engineering at AAL Shipping, commented that "clients are increasingly demanding logistics partners who can support both project execution and sustainability goals. The company also reported zero environmental incidents between 2023 and 2025, underscoring the robustness of its environmental management systems, process controls, and crew training programs.
