India's maritime rescue agency lost communication with a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship that sank off the country's eastern coast, the Indian Coast Guard reported.
The vessel had 24 crew members on board, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals, and one Bangladeshi, according to Commander Amit Uniyal, spokesperson for the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard dispatched two ships for the search and rescue mission from Sri Vijaya Puram, previously known as Port Blair, Uniyal stated.
The Coast Guard has rescued two people from life rafts. The search and rescue mission for the ship's sailors is underway, the agency reported.
The Ocean Winner was transporting iron ore to Singapore after departing from the eastern Indian port of Paradip on Thursday, government sources said, adding that the ship sank approximately 240 nautical miles from the port.
The cause of the sinking is unknown.
Captain Alekha Charan Sahoo, Deputy Conservator of Paradip Port Authority, said he was praying for the safety of the crew on board and hoping for the best.
