The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) granted the federal permit authorizing the construction of the Louisiana International Terminal (LIT), paving the way for the only new-build container port currently under development in the country; a project aimed at redefining the Gulf Coast's trade capacity, strengthening the American supply chain, and accelerating American manufacturing and commerce.
Strategically located on the lower Mississippi River, with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, LIT will connect over 30 states to global markets through direct access to all major Class I rail lines and the interstate highway system.
Supported by a public-private partnership between Port NOLA, Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), MSC's port terminal operating division, and Ports America, the project has successfully completed federal review with strong backing from Louisiana's bipartisan congressional delegation, the State, and regional economic development leaders.
"This is a decisive moment not only for Louisiana, but for the entire country. LIT will drive economic growth and consolidate the State's role as the nation's gateway to global trade. This investment will expand opportunities for American businesses and workers, enhance opportunities for local families, and ensure that Louisiana remains a key engine in the country's future," stated Governor Jeff Landry.
"This permit reflects what can be achieved when a bold vision is combined with rigorous planning and strong collaboration. The Louisiana International Terminal will create lasting opportunities for our communities, strengthen America's supply chain, and ensure that the State remains at the forefront of global trade for generations to come," said Michael Thomas, President of the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans.
"The granted permit transforms years of engineering, environmental assessment, and collaboration into concrete progress. This is not simply an expansion of a regional port, but infrastructure of national importance that will increase American export capacity and position Louisiana to lead the next generation of maritime trade. We are ready to build," stated Beth Branch, President and CEO of the Port of New Orleans.
"This is one of the most strategic terminal investments in our global portfolio. The Mississippi River corridor offers the United States the opportunity to build deep-water capacity comparable to any port in the world. We are proud to invest alongside Port NOLA and Ports America in a project that will strengthen America's position in global trade for decades to come," said Ammar Kanaan, CEO of Terminal Investment Limited (TiL).
"As one of the country's leading terminal operators, we have seen firsthand what modern and efficient infrastructure can do for American shippers. LIT will be a world-class facility, and we are ready to put our operational expertise to work for the next phase of the project, contributing to the creation of a terminal that meets the needs of the largest vessels calling in the Gulf," declared Scott Anderson, Interim CEO and Chairman of the Board of Ports America.
