DP World is strengthening its presence in the Americas through the development of expansions at the port facilities it operates. The expansion of Callao and Posorja, where new equipment has also been incorporated, reflects the company's strategy to consolidate its capacity within the region.

In a conversation with PortalPortuario, Otto Bottger, DP World's Commercial Director for the Americas Region, commented that for the continent, "several things are coming; we are always looking for opportunities throughout the region, and when the right opportunity appears, we look for a way to participate."

"For now, we are focused on expansions; we are in the midst of expanding our terminal in Santos (Brazil), we have just expanded the quay and received two new gantry cranes, we have two more on the way," said the commercial director, as an example of the work the company has carried out.

Along the same lines, Bottger added that "in Posorja, we have just completed the main stages of the expansion; we already have 800 square meters of quay in operation and seven gantry cranes working. We crossed the one million TEU barrier, so that has been another great success. There is some yard improvement work that is about to be completed, but it is a matter of weeks or a month."

"In Caucedo, where we just inaugurated a tremendous expansion two years ago, we are working on the next stage, which will take some time to become effective, but if you don't start now, you'll never get started," he indicated.

In particular, Otto Bottger emphasized the DP World Callao terminal, located on the South Pier of the Peruvian port facility, where in 2025 the goal of 2 million TEUs moved in a year was surpassed, being the first time such an achievement has been reached in a maritime facility in Peru. Likewise, the professional remarked that they are advancing in a new phase to expand the berthing sites offered by the concessionaire.

"The market's reception to our Callao project has been excellent because we have moved more than 2 million TEUs, 2.2 million TEUs, around there. We had customers for the expansion immediately; it has been a resounding success, and we are already working on the planning of a Phase 3, which will take us perhaps two years in the planning part and two or three more years to get it going, but that's how it is; and that is a port that already exists, it is a port where the expansion was just inaugurated last year, but you already have to start looking at where you are going," he remarked.

Bottger added that this initiative goes hand in hand with the extension of DP World's concession over the South Pier of the Port of Callao, "because an expansion of that magnitude, which will practically involve a new breakwater, a series of general infrastructure works, access, for example, in addition to the expansion of the quays themselves, takes decades to recover that investment; it is not done for two years, or for five, or for ten."

"We work the terminals as a network"

DP World's Commercial Director for the Americas Region highlighted the company's presence in the region, connecting the different terminals it operates in different countries to offer its clients a network that facilitates the coordination of vessels on their calls.

"Our presence in the region is obviously very strong; we have 14 terminals, counting Canada; in South America, we have Posorja, a Joint Venture in Paita with a partner, Callao, San Antonio, Lirquén, Buenos Aires, Santos, and Paramaribo, in Suriname," he expressed.

"What differentiates us is that we work the terminals as a network; we try to offer the client not an isolated product to a terminal, we try to offer a product where each one is different, but if we can coordinate the berthing windows in more than one port, that is an added value that we give and things like that," affirmed Otto Bottger.

Regarding Chile in particular, the commercial director commented that "we are in conversations with Empresa Portuaria San Antonio about the extension of the concession for ten years - of DP World San Antonio, which expires in 2031 - according to the concession contract, and that is a process that is fully underway."

Likewise, Bottger indicated that the company continues to observe new expansion opportunities in the region, including upcoming tenders for port concessions that will occur for some Chilean maritime terminals.

"Our job is to observe everything. Any opportunity, whether in Chile, Peru, or other parts of the region, we are always looking. But it is a difficult business, it is a long-term business, it requires a lot of upfront capital, and a risk is taken, so you have to be careful where you place your bets," he affirmed.
