The Minister of Transport and Communications, Angello Tangherlini Casal, met with the president of the Ucayali Shipowners Association, Luis López Panduro, to address the situation of the Parahuashá meander in Pucallpa, as well as the main needs of river transport in the region.
The Vice Minister of Transport, Gabriela Carrasco Carrasco, and the Director of the General Directorate of Transport Programs and Projects (DGPPT), Gabriela Lara Ruiz, also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, the representative of the association expressed concern about the progressive erosion of the meander's banks and its possible effects on navigation, nearby populations, and economic activities in the area.
According to the association, the advance of these erosive processes could lead to an eventual rupture of the meander or a change in the river's course, with consequences for the stability of the banks and river transport conditions.
Given this situation, the association raised the need for a technical and inter-institutional evaluation to understand the current conditions of the meander, identify possible risk scenarios, and define preventive measures. The head of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) acknowledged these concerns with the purpose of evaluating solution alternatives and coordinating with the competent entities.
Likewise, the status of Ucayali's port infrastructure and the situation of the project currently being formulated by Proinversión were addressed, due to its importance for passenger and cargo transport and the connectivity of Amazonian communities.
Another topic discussed was the request for a fuel subsidy for river vessels. In this regard, the minister took note of the proposal to evaluate its viability and the necessary arrangements with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), aimed at identifying the enabling mechanisms and the resources that this measure would require.
