Turkey Faces Energy Pressure as US Threatens Iran Trade Sanctions
Turkey risks losing Iranian natural gas supplies as the US threatens economic sanctions against countries conducting business with Tehran. Turkey sourced about 13% of its natural gas imports from Iran last year, equivalent to 7.7 billion cubic meters, making Iran its fourth-largest supplier. Bilateral trade reached $3.1 billion in the first half of the year. Turkey plans to offset potential losses through increased LNG imports and domestic production from its Sakarya offshore gas field in the Black Sea, with additional supplies from Azerbaijan scheduled to begin in 2029.
