The Directorate of Operations and the Superintendence of Environment, Health and Safety at Work of the Port Authority of Santos (APS) received a Japanese delegation from the Japan Overseas Coastal Area Development Institute on Friday (October 23rd) to discuss initiatives for implementing carbon neutrality in the port sector.
The institute is part of Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The delegation learned about the decarbonization projects underway at the Port of Santos, with emphasis on the recent ethanol bunkering for ships, the electrification of tugboats berthed at the quay, and the concession of the Itatinga Hydroelectric Plant for the production of Green Hydrogen, among others.
The port sector facilitates over 99% of Japanese trade through the ports of Kure, Osaka, Chiba, and Tokyo. Japan's goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2025. In 2024, Japan reduced its emissions by 28.7% compared to 2013.
To this end, Japan has promoted 387 studies in 77 countries to develop partnership projects in this area and also to strengthen friendly relations between peoples.
Japan needs hydrogen and ammonia produced outside its borders to enhance carbon reduction initiatives. Technological exchange between the Port of Santos and the Japanese institute will be the subject of upcoming meetings with the APS.
