The Port of Santos continues to set records. In August 2026, the largest port in Latin America achieved its highest historical mark in container movement. A total of 538.2 thousand TEU were handled last month, a 3.9% increase compared to August 2025. In the first eight months of 2026, overall cargo movement totaled 125.9 million tons, representing a 3.1% increase compared to the January-August 2025 period.
According to data released this Friday (09/25) by the Santos Port Authority (APS), exports totaled 93.1 million tons during the period, an increase of 2.9% compared to the 90.5 million tons recorded in 2025. Imports, in turn, grew by 3.6%, from 31.7 to 32.8 million tons.
Considering August alone, the overall cargo movement in Santos totaled 16.4 million tons, with a slight retraction of 0.5% compared to the same month last year. Exports fell by 0.7% (from 12.1 to 12.0 million tons) and imports rose by 0.2% (from 4.38 to 4.39 million tons).
Container traffic accumulated a total of 4 million TEU up to August 2026, which is also a record for the first eight months of a year. This mark represents an equal evolution of 3.9% compared to the same period in 2025. TEU is the standard unit of measurement for containers.
Liquid and Solid Bulk
Liquid bulk movement totaled 1.6 million tons in August – a 6.3% increase compared to the same month in 2025. Year-to-date, the 13.4 million tons recorded represent a 9.3% advance, a historical record for the period.
Solid bulk reached an accumulated total of 64 million tons in the first eight months of 2026 (+2.7% over 2025), another record for the period. Soybeans (49.5%), sugar (19.9%), and pelletized soybeans (11.9%) were the main products transported.
Importance of the Port of Santos for Brazil
The accumulated share of the Port of Santos in Brazilian foreign trade was 28% in the first eight months of the year. During the period, China maintained its position as the main trading partner: approximately 31.8% of national foreign trade transactions passing through the Port of Santos had the Asian country as their origin or destination.
São Paulo was the state with the largest share in foreign trade transactions through the Port of Santos in the first quarter of 2026. This amounted to US$ 30.3 billion, corresponding to 50.9% of the total.
