An Italian cruise ship equipped to house 4,000 participants and a series of container-type modules installed in the dock area of the Port of Nagoya, Japan, are the accommodation alternatives for the twentieth edition of the Asian Games (Asiad).
Given the decision not to build a dedicated Athletes' Village, the organization resorted to these port and maritime infrastructures with the aim of hosting the 17,000 athletes and officials arriving for the event, whose official opening is scheduled for this Saturday.
The deployment of accommodations in the port sector has been marred by access delays and room allocation failures.
According to reports from delegations that have begun to enter the Costa Serena and the port facilities, the credential validation process caused several hours of waiting.
Likewise, organizational problems were detected stemming from space allocations based solely on numerical quotas, which led to forced cohabitation of men and women in the same cabins, as well as unplanned cohabitation between coaches and athletes.
The local organizing committee and the Olympic Council of Asia explained that the saturation of capacities occurred after the increase in the list of participants, which went from the initially planned 15,000 to a maximum of 17,000 due to the incorporation of new sports disciplines.
Despite the operational complications recorded since the opening of the cruise ship and the port facility, the organization guaranteed that all delegations have a guaranteed place of residence during the competition.
Given the rigidities of the central accommodation system, the Japanese Olympic Committee activated a contingency plan. Local delegation authorities reported that negotiations are underway to readjust the internal distribution on the cruise ship and in the port, reserving transfers to previously contracted hotels in the city for cases where space corrections prove unfeasible.
The Costa Serena, an Italian-flagged vessel operated by Costa Cruises and owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC, is a Costa Concordia class ship built in 2007 by the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente (Genoa).
The ship represented an investment of 450 million euros and was christened by actress Marion Cotillard. Its sister ships include the Costa Pacifica, Costa Favolosa, Costa Fascinosa, Carnival Splendor, and the ill-fated Costa Concordia.
