A new direct air connection between Genoa and Frankfurt is scheduled to begin on March 28th, 2027, creating an additional link between Liguria and one of Europe's principal aviation hubs. The service will be operated by Discover Airlines with 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft and is planned to run twice a week throughout the 2027 summer season.
Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group's leisure carrier, operates from the Frankfurt and Munich hubs and provides connections to a broad network of European and international destinations. The airline currently operates Airbus A320 aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes.
The new route has been developed through cooperation between Discover Airlines, Genoa Airport and Costa Cruises. It is intended to increase international visitor flows to Genoa and Liguria, improve the region's access to major European aviation hubs and support demand from the German cruise market.
The connection is also expected to support Costa Cruises' fly-cruise programme. Passengers will be able to combine the Frankfurt–Genoa flight with Costa Toscana cruises departing from Savona and Costa Fascinosa sailings from Genoa, creating an integrated air-and-sea travel option for German customers travelling to the Western Mediterranean.
Genoa Airport Chairman Matteo Paroli described the Frankfurt connection as an important development for the airport and the wider Ligurian tourism and business sectors. He noted that direct access to a major European hub would improve the region's international accessibility while strengthening the relationship between air transport, the cruise port and tourism operators.
Costa Cruises CEO Mario Zanetti said the new service would provide another gateway for international cruise passengers using Genoa as their embarkation point. According to Zanetti, improved air connectivity could also generate wider economic benefits for the region, extending from cruising and hospitality to transportation and retail.
Discover Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Marco Götz said the route complemented the carrier's leisure network and would provide another option for passengers travelling to Genoa, which is both a destination on the Italian Riviera and an important Mediterranean cruise gateway.
Genoa Airport General Manager Francesco D'Amico said the project demonstrated the importance of combining air and cruise traffic. The route is expected to strengthen the airport's links with the Lufthansa Group and improve access to European hubs while responding to demand from the German market.
For Costa Cruises, the new service forms part of a broader effort to develop cruise traffic from Germany to the ports of Liguria. Daniel Caprile, Costa's Vice President of Pricing and Revenue Management, Itinerary and Transportation, said the twice-weekly operation would provide additional flexibility for passengers travelling to the region for cruises.
Discover Airlines currently describes Frankfurt and Munich as its principal German hubs and offers bookings through its own website, Lufthansa Group channels and travel agencies.
