Four vessels were attacked on 18 August, with another vessel attacked on 17 August.
The Russian-flagged Victoria V, with a capacity of around 7,000 tonnes, was attacked at the Novorossiysk port before it could load wheat. The Marshall Islands-flagged Fehu was hit after departing from the Novorossiysk port with wheat but was able to continue on its journey.
The Maltese-flagged Elina B was hit while proceeding towards the Bosphorus after loading around 56,000 tonnes of wheat. The San Marino-flagged Necibe was attacked at the Tuapse port after loading around 20,000 tonnes of wheat, and finally the Liberian-flagged Anna S was attacked while sailing towards Novorossiysk to load barley.
Ukrainian forces launched a massive strike on Novorossiysk on 12 August and also targeted port infrastructure. Exports from here have since been under pressure, as loading galleries and grain silos were also hit.
According to Bloomberg, both Russia and Ukraine have intensified their attacks on grain-carrying vessels. The two countries together account for around a quarter of global wheat exports. Frequent attacks on commercial vessels near these ports are causing charterers and shipowners to become wary and are posing a direct risk to shipping, marine insurance and global grain flows.
