The Communal Union of Seniors of San Antonio (Ucam) is developing a digital literacy workshop for its leaders, an initiative that seeks to strengthen skills for the use of technology in daily life and the management of their organizations. The project, which is one of the 67 initiatives awarded in 2025 by the San Antonio Port Contestable Funds, included the purchase of six computers to train organization leaders.
The classes include a basic course on using Word and Excel, focusing on writing letters, drafting projects, and creating spreadsheets for treasury tasks and administration of senior clubs.
Patricio Hernández, director of Ucam, highlighted that this initiative arose from a similar workshop conducted in 2025 by the port company at the State CFT. "We moved forward with the idea of applying for a project to buy computers and develop these courses in order to give continuity to those workshops," said Hernández.
In this regard, the leader elaborated by stating that "currently all procedures are done online, which generally causes seniors to fall behind, especially those over 60, as they are at a disadvantage in issues they must face daily, such as requesting appointments for health care."
Regarding the benefit generated by this project, Victoriano Gómez, deputy manager of Community Relations at San Antonio Port, indicated that "we know that older people have had to adapt quickly to an increasingly digital world, and that often creates significant gaps. That is why at San Antonio Port we are interested in supporting initiatives of this type, which have a real impact on the quality of life of seniors, who, through these workshops, will have more tools and new capabilities to function with greater autonomy and security in their daily lives."
Desire to learn
One of the aspects most highlighted by those participating in this workshop is the opportunity not to be left behind by technological advancements.
This is what Gladys Orozco, a member of the Tabita Senior Club, believes, commenting that "technology is leaving us behind because everything is done online today, and it's hard for us to understand. Even many times, for not understanding something, they think that seniors are foolish, but these opportunities show that we are capable of learning because it's never too late to do so, and this is a great opportunity that is being given to us."
For Nadia Álvarez, president of the Flor de Amigas Senior Club, the workshop has been useful because "in my younger days, I had knowledge of these topics, but by now, I had forgotten them. Here we are learning important things that will allow us to have our accounts more organized." Irnalda Osorio, treasurer of the same institution, believes that "sometimes things are difficult for us, but we are still moving forward because we want to learn something that will help us a lot, because today everything is seen through computers."
Once the workshop is concluded, the computers will be available to senior clubs that do not have this equipment.
