The incident occurred while the ballast vessel was en-route from Hawaii to Naha, Japan. The vessel suffered a shaft seal failure resulting in uncontrolled water ingress in the engine room and mechanical room. The crew initially attempted to control the water ingress however, their efforts were unsuccessful, prompting them to issue a distress call requesting assistance.
A nearby Hong Kong-flagged LPG carrier, Pacific Yantai, responded to the emergency. As the flooding could not be brought under control, all crew members abandoned SLNC York and were safely transferred to the assisting vessel.
According to the SLNC York's operator Schuyler Line Navigation Company (SLNC), the vessel remains stable and is expected to receive assistance from a support vessel for its voyage to port.
The SLNC York is a 2010-built vessel operated by Schuyler Line Navigation Company . The cargo vessel measures 142.52 meters in length, 23.55 meters in width, a deadweight of approximately 9,500 metric tonnes and gross tonnage of 12,679.
